Preparing to Go: Ideas on how to raise money for the tuition?

    I need some help thinking of ideas to raise money. My dream would be to spend my senior year in Spain, but if I want to go I have to raise about half of the money myself which is like $6000, any ideas how to get it?

    I think the best way is to start a blog and then send put the chipin widget on it and send out a massive forwarded email. It can feel awkward asking for money, but in the end you'd be surprised how man people are willing to help.... especially if you add the fact that you will send them a thank you card afterward...!

    Oh I know you can go to the AFS site and get on the sponser an AFSer site, as well as web seminars that can help you brainstorm and share ideas!

    I raised almost 2,500 by making a blog and selling subscriptions to it at 5 dollars plus donations. I updated it once every two months with  recipes, videos, pictures and stories about the country.

    Also 3,000 by asking businesses, doctors, college professors, college presidents and family for donations. I wrote letters and delivered them by hand. Remember always write a thank you even if they don't give you anything!

    I know someone who had a going away party and got 2,000 USD from friends and family who came. Also people who sold pencils with facts about their host country in malls asking for donations.

    Be sure to check your local laws about selling things and raffles...sometimes you are prohibted to do so. Also look online at fastweb for exchange scholarships or on AFS online.

    My daughter is a recent returnee from a year in Peru. We raised $1900 in a yard sale. Just ask all your friends and family to donate items to sell. You'd be surprised at the amount of stuff they would be willing to give. She also raised about $2000 with the sponser an afser "chip in" on a blog. You can see my daughters blog at
