I love European music! I definitely get a kick out of the techno that is played in the clubs there, though my European friends tell me it's called pop and not techno, but it really gets you moving, even if it's a little strange at first. I'm pretty sure this band is from Holland, Ellen ten Damme, but I think they're pretty good...something to check out! A lot of my favorite bands come from Europe, most from the UK anyways (Radiohead, whoever said Guano Apes was right on, the list keeps going!) My friend from Croatia told me that most everyone listens to American music, atleast in her country...I am really excited to go abroad and share the music I like with people and find out what is big there. Chelsea Netherlands 03-04 Hopefully!

Here's some music from Norway Kaizer's Orchestra- They are SO funny. They sing about the 'resistance', and tell a story about the stupid **** they did with their friends, with lyrics like 'ompa til du dør' (ompa til you die) and 'some where taken with absolut vodka while others where taken with absolute polka... good stuff. it's like light rock where they incorporate the accordian. Ephemera- Girly group with a light sound, very catchy with grat accoustics. They live in Bergen, where I live. Ein Tynn Tråd- I know the artist personally, and he has a great alternative sound, with cool lyrics as well. Kings Of Convenience- They moved to Britain when they got somewhat populary (may explain why you've heard of them), but they're originally a local group from Bergen! Those are just a few... I will miss the music so much when I go home! Catherine, YP Norway. 02-03

I've always loved Russian music. I download it from myriad Russian MP3 sites, HOORAY for Russian MP3 sites! Well, anyway, I like Russian techno (it has a different feel from Western techno), folk music, classical music (Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich), and, weirdly enough, Russian rap. Yes, Russian rap. It's hilarious, and some of it is actually good... Marian Rossiya YP 03-04 The only Russian rap fan in Kansas, I'm sure

My favorite foreign music: Manu Chau: Columbian - sings in Spanish, English, Portuguese and French Lais: Belgian folk music, sings in Dutch & French Tarkan: Turkish pop - very cool even though I haven't got a clue as to what he's saying. Sigur Ros: mellow Icelandic music - it sounds really different If I think of any more I'll post them. Cindy YP '00-'01 Belgium-Flanders

    etrauba -- 3/22/2003 12:12:00 AM

Yeah for Les Nubians and Manu Chao! Also, I downloaded a bunch of music from a spanish-singing band called Orishas, which is great. I also really like Saian Supa Crew (French). And, even though it's kinda old, Zebda (French as well). By the way, does anyone know if The Cardigans are American or not?

    clee -- 3/22/2003 11:49:00 AM

I hate LAs Ketchup with a burning firey passion in the depths of my soul!! The y play it so much in Hungary. Some cool hungarian alternative groups (which of course get NO radio play here): Quimby Balaton Kispál és a Borz Dolores Privat Nihil there are more, but these are my favorites. They usually have songs in hungarian and english, but they sound cool anyway. If you want to look for hungarian alternative search for "magyar alternativ". Soulseek is a really great, very international mp3 search engine. Cat Hungary2002-2003

Have any of you seen shows with American bands while abroad?

    Foreign Musik
    vcarey -- 3/17/2003 7:46:00 PM

Hey! Am I the only one dissatisfied with the selection of american music out there? (Don't say 'yes' :) Anyway I am always looking for new "sounds" so I thought it would be a good idea for those who already went abroad or otherwise to share bands they found and liked when they were abroad. It doesn't matter if they don't sing in english. Share whatever you've got and give a tiny hint as to the style of music that it is. Just a few of the foreign bands I like (in case anybody is interested): kent (ie, the best band ever), the motorhomes, myslovitz (weird polish singing but its kind of pretty), the rasmus, prime sth (more..american pop sounding), ivy (french band that started in NY), Kosheen (welsh, i believe), Guano apes (german band-sings in english..really good hard music) Thanks! -Vanessa (åker till Sverige 03-04)

hey, foreign music..mmm. never actually been to europe or wherever, but i do have a couple good foreign bands up my sleeve anyway. don't know what kind of music you like but les nubians are really good hip hop/jazzy french chicks...very good. stereo total is an awesome band from berlin that sings in german french and english and it's pretty happy danceable music. i like it. souvenir is a band from spain that sings in french and is pretty mellow, but good. anyway those are the few that come to mind first. and they're all great. lex

Hey nessa My pen pal said hat her fave band in Sweden is Westlife (I think it's a NSYNC type pop group that sings in English). I don't Know if that's your type of muzik but she's obsessed with them. Mekena:)

    vcarey -- 3/17/2003 8:39:00 PM

haha, i think westlife is from ireland or something. but when my brother was an exchange student in sweden everyone thought he was one of the guys from westlife. needless to say, all the girls took to him real fast. yeah...westlife is pretty pop, but they have good voices at least--compared to other pop musicians *cough*aaroncarter -ness

la ley is a good spanish rock group. not to mention shakira...she has earlier stuff, too. but im sure you music freaks know that she hasnt always been mainstream. but her mainstream stuff is awesome. but its that cd that made her mainstream. matt

vcarey- Kent is indeed awesome. Good thing you're going to Sweden. For other good Swedish music, check out Bo Kaspers Orkestra. It's a little on the jazz side. Royksopp's some good Swedish techno as well. Norway has a fair amount of Swedish music which is why I know these groups.

    ccox -- 3/22/2003 4:32:00 PM

Las Ketchup is entertaining for about five minutes. But really, it gets annoying. I LOVE Juanes. Nobody really knows him that well, he{s a colombian singer, but I can{t get enought of "A dios le pido" and "Mala gente." I also love "fotografia" this duet that he does w/ Nelly Furtado, it{s really sad but describes exactly what I was feeling when I left Venezuela!!!! Then theres: Sin Bandera, Shakira (eyes like your is the best!) Olga Tañon, la ley is great too. and A.5 is a great Venezuelan group. Christina YP Venezuela 02 SP Argentina 03

    Re: Foreign Musik
    vcarey -- 3/22/2003 5:41:00 PM

No, the Cardigans are Swedish actually. They are kind of buddies with kent (although I bet kent would disagree), but one of the members of the cardigans and one of the members of kent got together a few years ago and made another small-time band called 'Paus' ('Break'). They also sing in swedish. a little more mellow though, but very nice. so once again, the cardigans are swedish, not american. if any one is interested in their new song out, it's called 'for what it's worth', and they have a new album out called 'long gone before daylight'. does anyone know any good german/dutch/french/norwegian/danish/czech/etc! rock bands (rock, rock pop, indie rock, or something like that. nothing too techno-y.) thanks! -Ness

check out Asian Kung Fu Generation. They're from Japan, but all of their songs are awesome. They're one of the few bands who I can actually go through an entire CD without getting bored or wanting to hear a new sound. Some of their greats are Blue Train, Haruka Kanata, Road Movie, and Tobenai Sakana.
