When is the best time to apply for a year abroad? I want to go to Switzerland for a gap year in the fall of 2010. I don't know if I should start applying now. How many spots are usually open? Do they get taken fast?

I am applying to college too and defering for a year.. did anyone do that?

    thanks!

Yes, I applied to college and deferred for a year.  I actually graduated a semester early from high school and went to Paraguay February 2006 - January 2007, so I had an extra semester before college when I came back.  But anyway, I do recommend applying and deferring.  It's really nice not to have to worry about college applications when you're in a foreign country!  I think it would really take away from your exchange if you were stressing out about that.

As for applying to AFS, I think it's probably not too early to start working on the application, or at least the pre-application.  For popular countries it's good to apply early.

    Good luck!
