I'm currently in the application process of going abroad for 2010-2011, and many of the scholarship oppurtunities that can really help or pay my full way are for 3rd world and developing countries (China, India, Egypt, Morocco, Tajikistan, etc.). Personally, I don't have many objections to going to any of these places, but, obviously, my parents are concerned about my safety. So how big of a concern is safety when studying in these countries?

you know, i've been wondering the same thing. I'm really interested in going to somewhere like China or Thailand but my parents are adamant about such places being unsafe. if they are so unsafe, why does AFS have these programs? are they safe?

I'm applying to india 2010-2011, and though those countries may not be 1st world, it doesn't mean there aren't any safe areas. you won't get placed in a dangerous area.

I'm in Aswan, Egypt right now, and my parents were also concerned about safety before I came. I feel really safe here though, I get harassed a lot but I never feel as if I'm in danger. The only thing is to not take cab rides alone! If you have any more questions, my email is oliviarhines@hotmail.com
